Sugar-Free Snack Ideas

When we talk about “sugar-free,” it’s helpful to distinguish between foods that contain no sugars at all and those that contain naturally occurring sugars (like fruit), balanced with fibre, protein, and healthy fats to support blood sugar stability.

If you’re looking for simple, satisfying options to support stable energy and reduce sugar cravings, here are 10 nourishing snack ideas, divided into the two categories.

Snacks with No Sugars (Including Natural Sugars)

These options contain virtually no sugar and are ideal if you’re looking to reduce cravings or stabilise blood sugar more strictly.

  • Boiled eggs with sea salt or herbs

    Simple, protein-rich, and very satisfying.

  • Avocado with lemon and olive oil

Healthy fats to keep you full and support steady energy.

  • Cucumber sticks with hummus or tahini

Refreshing with a creamy, savoury dip.

  • Cheese and olives

A great combination of fat and protein with a savoury edge.

  • Handful of nuts (e.g. almonds, walnuts, macadamias)

Choose raw or lightly roasted, unsweetened varieties.

Snacks with Natural Sugars (Balanced to Support Blood Sugar Levels)

These options include whole-food sources of natural sugar, paired with fibre, protein, or fat to slow absorption and prevent energy dips.

  • Apple slices with almond butter

Fibre + healthy fats = more sustained energy.

  • Greek yoghurt with berries and seeds

Protein-rich yoghurt balances the natural sugars in fruit.

  • Oatcakes with cottage cheese and sliced pear

A balanced mix of carbs, protein, and fibre.

  • Banana with peanut butter and cinnamon

A more filling option—great pre-activity snack.

  • Chia pudding made with unsweetened milk and topped with a few berries

Rich in fibre and omega-3 fats, helping slow sugar release.

Simple Chia Pudding

(Sugar-Free and Blood Sugar Friendly)

A quick, nourishing option you can prepare in advance for an easy snack or breakfast.

Ingredients (1 serving):

  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds

  • 150 ml milk (your choice, unsweetened)

  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Method:

  1. Add the chia seeds to a jar or bowl.

  2. Pour in the milk and stir well to combine.

  3. Add cinnamon or vanilla if using.

  4. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes, then stir again to prevent clumping.

  5. Cover and place in the fridge for at least 2 hours, or overnight.

  6. Stir before serving and add your chosen toppings.

Tip: If you prefer a smoother texture, blend the mixture before chilling.

Topping Options:

  • A small handful of berries

  • A spoon of yoghurt

  • A sprinkle of nuts or seeds or nut butter

A Gentle Reminder

It’s not about eliminating all sugar, but about supporting your body with balanced choices that keep your energy steady and reduce the cycle of cravings. Tuning into how different snacks make you feel is just as important as what’s on the plate.

Enjoy!
